Procedures for Release of Student Information

Recognition of Prior learning and Credit Transfer

Brougham has an obligation to recognize qualifications and statements of attainment issued by other RTO’s. Brougham acknowledges skills and knowledge gained through life experiences, work experiences, other courses and on-the-job training through its Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) process. BAS is obligated to offer RPL and C.T. opportunities assessment.
Three forms of RPL are available:

1. Credit Transfer
The Advanced Diploma of Fine Arts, Diploma of Visual Art, Certificate III in Arts Administration, Certificates III & IV in Visual Arts & Contemporary Craft, Certificate IV in Photoimaging and Diploma of Photoimaging are Nationally Recognised Training Courses. Formal credit is given for identical modules/units completed at another Registered Training Organisations.

2. Exemptions
Formal credit is also given if a student has obtained a pass mark (or better) in similar modules/units in a similar or higher-level course conducted by an appropriately recognised training provider.

3. RPL Assessments
Credit may also be granted if a student is able to demonstrate that through previous life and work experiences they have gained the knowledge, skills or competencies of a unit. If a student feels they may have grounds for receiving such recognition they are encouraged to obtain an RPL Application Form from reception. A qualified RPL Assessor will measure these experiences against the skills/competencies to be gained from the course units to see if the student can be exempt from doing parts, or all of those units.

Advantages of Gaining RPL
It may mean you complete your course sooner or that you have more time to spend on other subjects
You will not be repeating learning you have already gained
You will be given formal recognition of knowledge you have gained in other situations.

When to Apply for RPL
At enrolment or
At the commencement of a module/unit

Procedure for Applying for RPL
Copies of the Course Guides are available in the student library for you to read at any time. These guides contain summaries of each module/unit offered by Brougham. You will be shown the location of the library at your Enrollment and/or at Orientation. As well, at the commencement of each module/unit you will be given a summary of the content of each unit or qualification. If you feel you may qualify for RPL complete an application form and submit it to the Enrolment Officer.

Once a qualified staff member has read your application, you will be requested to attend an interview so that you can be assisted with your application.

How Your Application is Assessed
In considering your application, the Assessor may consider the following:
Your degree of knowledge as evident in discussion at interview
References from people who can verify your claims
A demonstration of the skill/competency in question.
Assignment/course work done in previous courses.
Knowledge assessed must be current, verifiable and equivalent to the performance criteria of each unit.

If you don’t have documentation, you may wish to bring a support person able to verify your skills/competency. Whatever the situation, our staff members are there to help you.

At the end of your interview you will be advised if you were successful or not. Sometimes your assessor may require further information and you will be told if this is the case.

If you are successful in gaining RPL for a unit, a pass will be recorded against your name and will be included with your other results on your certificate at the end of the course.
