Code of Practice
GENERAL CONDUCT POLICY
- All persons part of the Brougham community can expect to be treated with respect and fairness in accordance with standards of the larger community and within the law. This includes legislation concerning the Privacy Act; Crimes and Controlled Substances Act; Sexual harassment and Anti-discrimination laws.
- All property of Brougham is to be treated with respect and care and Occupational, Health and Safety rules are to be observed. The “no smoking” rule must be observed.
- Strenuous attempts will be made to resolve alleged misconduct through informal discussion and mediation.
- Honesty on submission of assignments and the acknowledgement of the work of others is an imperative.
- Students must pay fees when they are due.
- Brougham must act on all substantiated complaints.
MANAGEMENT CODE OF PRACTICE
Brougham’s expects that those undertaking management responsibilities will:
- Operate in a professional manner.
- Be diligent in seeking sensible and competent solutions to managerial problems.
- Constantly seek to improve operational structures and own skills and abilities.< br>
- Share information with others: staff, students and Directors, so that Brougham is able to operate efficiently.
- Use the available expertise and canvas a range of views so that effective decisions can be made.
- Seek feedback.
- Ensure confidential information is maintained and treated sensitively.
- Declare any potential self-interest in decision making.
- Maintain courteous, honest and respectful attitude towards students, staff and Directors while avoiding inducement through threat.
- Carry out duties with diligence and adhere to Brougham’s General Code of practice in respect of access and equity.
TEACHER CODE OF PRACTICE
In keeping with Australian Quality Training Framework Standards of Compliance and Brougham’s General Code of Practice it is expected that teaching staff will:
- Have an excellent and current knowledge of the units and courses they teach.
- Ensure that students feel comfortable in asking questions and are able to seek clarification of projects and concepts taught in the program. Give appropriate information to students at the outset of the unit. See Unit Guide information.
- Provide opportunities for flexible learning where appropriate.
- Adapt styles of teaching to meet individual learning needs and identify students who may need additional help with literacy skills.
- Prepare teaching sessions well, developing quality teaching materials.
- Supervise all scheduled classes.
- Take care of equipment and facilities, ensuring that classrooms are cleared for following classes.
- Ensure the students are well informed about timetable changes.
- Carry out fair, reliable and valid assessments.
- Adhere to curriculum and/or training package.
- Adhere to Brougham’s Access and Equity policy which ensures that a non-discriminatory learning environment is maintained. The access and equity policy is outlined in Brougham’s General Code of Practice.
OCCUPATIONAL HEALTH AND SAFETY
Brougham undertakes to:
- Provide a safe working environment ensuring that chemicals are well labelled and stored, physical hazards are minimized and work periods do not cause undue stress.
- Consistently monitor and upgrade facilities and conditions.
- Inform all staff and students of regulations and laws regarding OH&S.
- Nominate a staff representative to disseminate information and keep records.
- Undertake safety audits annually.
- Undertake analysis of audits and follow through with “action taken” reports.
- Carry appropriate insurance in terms of public liability and workcover.
- Take advice at least annually and when necessary from experts (worksafe, qualified officer, government compliance regulator) to ensure current regulations are in place.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL) & CREDIT TRANSFER
An applicant who has relevant experience and previous formal or informal learning, may be eligible for credit for certain units and will be given opportunities to apply for assessment. Under the Victorian Qualifications Authority Brougham is obliged to recognise qualifications and statements of attainment issued by other Registered Training Organisations.
